Change the colour associated with "red" via CSS. Possible?

If you want, when specifying a colour in CSS you can just type red, and you get red. But, what if you wanted to just type red, but wanted a different shade of red? Can the hex code associated with “red” be changed?

I’m thinking it can’t, as it’s at the browser level, but maybe it can?

And yes, I know I can use a hex code, but for this application, there are reasons we need the user to be able to type “red”.

With custom coding, I think that would be possible.

Following topic doesn’t fit perfectly, you might get an idea.

I had a read of that earlier, and then went to play with :rootbut souldn’t crack it.
