In the case of this particular site, and other really content heavy sites, it boils down to:
- No images for aprox 20 seconds.
- Blur’d images for aprox 20 seconds.
- Rethink the content
The later bing the sensible option (where possible).
In the case of this particular site, I don’t think they are making the best of lazy loading though.
It appears they are not switching out the tiny blur’d images, until all the images are loaded.
As opposed to switching them out one by one as they load, thus making images above the fold appear properly an awful lot quicker.
